Coaching or training?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This is the question that comes up regularly when we talk to our customers. There's no doubt in my mind, the two approaches complement each other<\/strong>. With a limited budget, I invite you to ask yourself the following questions.<\/p>\n

1- Is your organisational environment stable?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For training to be beneficial, it must be given in a context where the organisation's vision is clear and communicated. There is nothing worse than training in a context where the message is inconsistent with management behaviour. The aim of training is to develop knowledge and skills. Nobody is open to learning in an environment of uncertainty.<\/p>\n

2- Have you analysed your real needs?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Training is aimed at a group of people, whereas coaching is normally aimed at an individual. Is your desire to train really to develop collective skills or to reach certain people more specifically? Training in the hope that the hat fits the people concerned is generally a bad strategy. These people end up not feeling involved, while others end up frustrated by the indirect approach to training.<\/p>\n

3- How quickly would you like to see results?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Training does not produce quick results. It's better to advocate a long-term training approach to see changes take place. What about coaching? Coaching accelerates behavioural change. Coaching targets very specific limiting barriers on which work is concentrated. Coaching produces results more quickly because the approach is direct and personalised.<\/p>\n

4- Who can benefit from coaching?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Coaching is appropriate for anyone in the organisation who shows behaviours that need to be worked on, but for whom you recognise their value to the business. The mistake is to invest only in managers. Influence is generally found further down the line.<\/p>\n

Training and coaching are complementary and should be part of employee development plans. A corporate culture cannot become a learning culture if employees are not encouraged to excel.<\/p>\n

At a time when nothing was changing, we could hope to stay the course by simply providing on-the-job training. Today we're somewhere else. Our cognitive faculties must constantly keep pace with all the changes and novelties that destabilise old habits.<\/p>\n
